The update could not finish. The usual causes are a VPN or firewall blocking Microsoft's update servers, too little space in the System Reserved partition, or a failed .NET Framework 3.5 install.
How to fix it
- Disconnect any VPN and pause third-party antivirus, then try again.
- Make sure the PC has at least 20 GB free on C:.
- Run the repair commands:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator (search "cmd", right-click, Run as administrator).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish (it can sit at 20% for a while). - Then run:
sfc /scannow - Restart the PC.
- If it is .NET Framework 3.5 failing, turn it on from Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off, with the internet connected.
- If one update keeps failing, download it by its KB number from the Microsoft Update Catalog (catalog.update.microsoft.com) and install it by double-clicking the file.
Is it serious?
Fixable in most cases. If the System Reserved partition is full, that needs a disk tool and some care.
