A file Windows Update needs is missing or damaged. The Windows component store is corrupted.
How to fix it
- Open Command Prompt as administrator (search "cmd", right-click, Run as administrator).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish (it can sit at 20% for a while). - Then run:
sfc /scannow - Restart the PC.
- Run Windows Update again.
- If one update keeps failing, download it by its KB number from the Microsoft Update Catalog (catalog.update.microsoft.com) and install it by double-clicking the file.
Is it serious?
DISM fixes most cases. If not, an in-place repair install (run Windows setup and keep files and apps) fixes the rest.
